“Tithes are required as a matter of debt, and he who has been unwilling to give, them has been guilty of robbery. Whoever, therefore desires to secure a reward for himself, let him render tithes and out of their nine parts let him seek to give alms”. (Augustine)
Tithing does not promote legalism; it promotes obedience to God’s word. The meaning of the word tithe is ten percent.
MALACHI 3:8-10 - Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
God says; bring the tithe into the storehouse not just part of it. Whatever God provides, ten percent belongs to Him. The tithe is a demonstration of obedience. Voluntary offerings are a demonstration of love, joy and worship.
EXODUS 36:5-7 - and said to Moses, "The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the LORD has commanded us to do." So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, "Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary." So the people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.
In his book Money, Possessions and Eternity, Randy Alcorn says “The grace of giving transformed a pack of gripers and whiners into joyful worshipers – and the same thing happens sometimes in the church today.”
Giving must always be voluntary. The tithe is only the basic testimony of a Christian. God is the owner of all that a Christian possesses. A Christian never gives to get, this is not scriptural, however God does in His grace reward obedience.
